DECA: The DECA mission statement is “to prepare emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality and management, competence, innovation, integrity and teamwork in high schools and colleges around the globe.” We will be conducting community outreach, campaign fundraising, and school store operations.
French National Honor Society: The French National Honor Society celebrates French language and culture in France and francophone countries. During the year, students from that organization will sponsor a few different events to raise awareness of the culture of the French speaking world. Students from this organization meet on Mondays and will be working on several projects that will be displayed at the High school so that other students can learn and enjoy the culture that derives from the French speaking world. The FNHS students will be offering tutoring in French during Advisory for students who take French classes at Cromwell High School. Events will also include a Mardi Gras fundraiser, movie night, and bingo night.
Future Problem Solving Club: The Future Problem Solving Club (FPS) is affiliated with the state and international program. Individually or in teams, club members apply the FPS six-step critical-thinking process to produce solutions to future global scenarios involving technological, social, scientific, political, or economic issues. The club works competitively to advance to state and international competition.
Educational Leadership Club: The purpose of this club is to cultivate an interest in education, provide a possible pathway to becoming an educator, and to provide meaningful and enriching experiences for Cromwell Public School students at the elementary, intermediate, middle, and high school levels.
GSA: The Gay-Straight Alliance, or GSA for short, is a primarily student-run organization that unites LGBTQ+ and allied youth to build community and organize around issues impacting them in their schools and communities. GSA not only operates as a safe space for students, but also as a vehicle for deep social change related to social justice specifically centered around gender and love.
History Club: The platform is an exploration of historical events, trends and movements. The Modern American period is the backdrop, but the topic selections are open to any sphere of geographical or cultural interest selected by individual members or the group as a whole. The theme, regardless of topic, will be contemporary relevance of historical touchstones, and whether or not the experiences have been, or could be, used to create positive change.
Jazz Band: Jazz Band is an auditioned group that meets every Thursday night. We play mostly jazz, rock, latin and funk music. The Jazz Band will perform in school concerts, community events, and travel around the United States to compete in various performance festivals.
Literary Magazine: Cromwell High School's Literary Magazine is a positive environment where any student can improve their creative writing skills. As a team we produce a literary magazine for the entire school to enjoy, as well as provide a place for students to review and critique the works of their peers. We run several writing contests for the student body each year. Members select topics of personal and general interest, and with the assistance of the club advisor, produce publishable quality pieces exhibiting excellence and merit. Any student may join this club.
National Art Honor Society: The purpose of the National Art Honor Society is to recognize and inspire high school art students in their pursuit of the highest standards of artistic ability while attending CHS. NAHS strongly supports students who are currently taking art courses and maintain a B average or higher in the class. Also, if a student is unable to attend art class due to schedule conflicts, but displays a commitment to developing their art, special consideration for them to join is encouraged.
National Honor Society: The National Honor Society (NHS) is an organization for 11th and 12th grade high schoolers that promotes leadership, service, character, and scholarship. Students must maintain all pillars of NHS in order to maintain a part of the group.
Newspaper Club: The CHS Newspaper Club holds its meetings every other Friday during the Advisory block. Meeting sessions are used for training, planning, and reviewing new story ideas for each edition. We work to gain experience in writing and digital publishing while working as a team to learn about our school and community. We sometimes have special guests and are also looking at potential field trips in the future as well. We welcome all members and encourage any students interested in journalism, writing, photography, music, or even comic-creation to join. Our work is published digitally every month to our website. Pep Band: The CHS Pep Band plays at all the home football games and pep rallies. We play mostly pop and rock music and our goal is to pep up the crowd!
Principal’s Advisory: This group of students meets with the principal, weekly, to discuss issues of concern at Cromwell High School. The meetings provide an opportunity for students to have their voices heard and to give input on matters that may directly affect the student population. The Student Advisory team meets during the advisory period and is open to students in grades 9 – 12.
Robotics: CHS Robotics, otherwise known as The Bionic Panthers , is a school-wide robotics team dedicated to learning, building, and programming robots through the Vex Robotics System. If you want to work with classmates to design competition level robots, competing against other schools in the state, this is the place to be! It is not a requirement to be an exceptional robot builder or programmer, if you enjoy building things, programming, or the challenge of a good problem, this is a great place to expand your skills.
Select Choir: Select choir is an auditioned group that rehearses weekly after school and one Monday night per month. They have many performances throughout the school year. In addition to taking part in seasonal concerts at CHS, the Select Choir competes in festivals within the yearly choir and band trip. Students in Select Choir should be prepared for a rigorous rehearsal schedule and challenging music that will bring them to the next level of choral mastery.
School to Career: Provide students with assistance in resume writing, interview skills, and general employment opportunity questions for both the immediate and future. Students have the ability to meet with the advisor before or after school with questions or help requests. School-to-Career also works hand in hand with the Middlesex Chamber of Commerce and the Business and Education Council to arrange the Annual Career Expo at Wesleyan University. Over 100 careers are represented with over 100 speakers as well as human resource professionals that provide mock job interviews for select students who are interested.
Scoreboard Graphics: responsible for creating graphics and running the scoreboard at Friday night home football games to promote and increase positivity and spirit of the spectators. Team members will use creativity and learn important visual and technical skills.
Spanish National Honor Society: This student organization is also called the Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica, also known as “SNHH.” The Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica is a national organization. The purpose of the Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica is to recognize high achievement in Spanish by students of secondary schools and to promote continuity of interest in Hispanic studies. Students must have a 90% or better in each Spanish language course they have taken during their Cromwell High School career. Students are invited to participate via a google classroom and an applicationis required in order for the student to be admitted and inducted into this society. The society requires 15 hours of community service. 7.5 hours need to be completed specifically supporting a latino community. The other 7.5 hours could be shared with other clubs and societies. The induction ceremony is usually the second week in November.
Shoreline Sportsmanship Council: The SSC is a group of students who represent Cromwell High School and meet with the other schools within the Shoreline Conference about sportsmanship. The council works to better understand sportsmanship on schools sports teams within Cromwell High School and collaborate with other shoreline conference student-athletes on ways to enhance sportsmanship in all of our schools. The mission is to help educate and empower student-athletes to promote good sportsmanship within Cromwell High School, the Shoreline Conference and address other issues regarding athletics.
Student Council: We, the members of the Student Council make it our goal to include all members of the student body to work toward the betterment of our school and community. We strive for students to pursue their leadership roles and skills throughout life to enhance and impact today’s society. Our motto is “ Home of the Champions”. An efficient student government is as essential to a school as classes are. Each student of Cromwell High should understand the council, since the council represents the student body. In today’s world a vital student council is needed to help guide our young people.
The CHS Student Council consists of the class executive members, class representatives, and non-voting club member representatives. Meetings are held biweekly with all but two meetings held before school. Two meetings are held at night: one each semester. A minimum of fourteen hours, seven each semester, must be met by every member along with abiding by the student discipline code as stated in the handbook and the attendance policy for Student Council. The Executive Board, composed of eight members from within the council, are the core of the council and meets bimonthly in the morning. The officers are President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Historian, Senior & Junior BOE Representatives, & Webmaster.
Each class elects a President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and nine class representatives at the end of each year. Freshmen elections take place at the end of their 8th grade year. Four class representatives at large are chosen through an application and interview process after elections have taken place in early September. All representatives are voting members of the Student Council. Student Council is open to all students.
Student Equity Committee: The Student Equity Committee coordinates a variety of activities to create a more equitable environment at CHS and the district. Our student equity committee vision is to strive for social justice and equity. Our initial action is to learn how to have and participate in uncomfortable yet necessary conversations. These courageous conversations will spread awareness in the community and educate students and staff on how to create a more equitable environment. We are committed to acknowledging past and present issues and working to create change. We value all students and want to empower you to have a voice! All students are welcome to join this committee.
Tri-M Honor Society: The TRI-M Music Honor Society at Cromwell High School recognizes students for their academic and musical achievements, reward them for their accomplishments and service activities, and to inspire other students to excel at music and leadership. Auditions take place at the end of each school year.
Ultimate Frisbee Club: The Ultimate Frisbee Club offers an opportunity for students to socialize and take part in semi competitive ultimate frisbee games and practice sessions. The club will meet each Friday while the weather is good during the advisory block and during a few after school sessions in the fall. All are welcome to join our wonderful club.
Unity Club: The purpose of Unity Club is to provide an open, inclusive space where every student is welcomed and accepted in order to promote equity, celebrate diversity, and encourage a positive school climate. Unity club meets bi-weekly to discuss remembrance months, relevant topics important to and appropriate for teens, and provide a forum for student expression. Unity club promotes student leadership through our work in the school building and participation in the Connecticut Youth Forum.
World Language Club: This student organization exists as an extra-curricular educational activity to promote the study of world languages at Cromwell High School and to provide students the opportunity to gain a greater knowledge of and appreciation for other cultures. Various fund-raisers earn money, which enable students to go on field trips, and therefore experience foreign cultures first-hand. This club promotes an understanding and appreciation of both Francophone and Hispanic language and other cultures. Cultural events have included visits to museums, plays, restaurants, and movies. The club is open to any student, even those who are not taking French or Spanish at Cromwell High School.
Yearbook: CHS Yearbook Club is a student-focused publication club where students work collaboratively to build the CHS Yearbook each year. It meets bi-weekly to plan page designs, make content-based decisions, as well as shoot, collect and arrange pictures. An emphasis is placed on teamwork and co-working skills. Due to the rigor involved in creating a yearbook, after school attendance is required.
